Intervista a Lois Lowry

INTRODUCTION

After reading and enjoying “The Giver” by Lois Lowry we interviewed the author, who made herself available to answer our questions. In the distopichal book she wrote, Jonas tries to take down the apparently perfect society, where he had been forced to live his entire life.

This is what Lois replied to our topics.

INTRODUZIONE

Dopo aver letto “The Giver” di Lois Lowry e averlo apprezzato particolarmente, abbiamo pensato di intervistare l’autrice che si è resa estremamente disponibile a rispondere alle nostre domande.

Il romanzo sopracitato, di genere distopico, descrive il tentativo del protagonista Jonas di rovesciare la società apparentemente perfetta in cui è stato costretto a vivere per tutta la sua vita.

Questo è ciò che Lois ha replicato ai quesiti proposti:

1) Where did you get the inspiration for "The giver" from?

I was interested in the whole topic of human memory. My father was getting old and beginning to lose some of his memories and it made me wonder…what if we could control memory? Somehow erase memories that make us feel sad, or scared? Of course when a writer begins to wonder about something, often a story starts to take place. That’s what happened, and how THE GIVER began

1)Dove hai trovato l’ispirazione per “The giver”?

Ero affascinata in generale dalla memoria umana. Mio padre stava diventando anziano e iniziava a perdere alcuni suoi ricordi, cosa che mi ha fatto riflettere…e se potessimo controllare la memoria? Eliminare in un qualche modo i ricordi che ci fanno sentire tristi, o spaventati?

Ovviamente quando uno scrittore inizia a rimuginare, spesso una storia prende forma.

Questo è ció che è accaduto, e come THE GIVER è iniziato.

2) How was the writing process? Easy or did you face any challenges?

The initial writing always feels easy for me because I enjoy it so much. The challenges come with the revisions, the re-writing, because that’s when you have to think things through, make them logical and believable and…you hope…eloquent. You have to flesh out the characters, make them seem real. You have to read the dialogue aloud and be certain it flows the way real conversation would.

2) Com’è stato il processo di scrittura? Facile oppure hai riscontrato alcune sfide/ostacoli?

La stesura iniziale di un libro è sempre molto facile per me, poiché la apprezzo particolarmente. Le sfide emergono con la revisione, la riscrittura: è quando devi approfondire, ampliare i concetti, rendere le situazioni logiche e credibili e…speri…eloquenti.

Bisogna arricchire i personaggi, farli sembrare “umani”. Bisogna leggere i dialoghi a voce alta, ed accertarsi che scorrano come in una conversazione verosimile.

3) Were there any book chapters that you had to rewrite or delete completely?

No, I wrote it straight through, and when I went back it was only a matter of deepening things, rewriting bits and pieces here and there. Sometimes, with a bak, I will find that I need to add (or remove) a character. But everything…and everyone…in THE GIVER remained as they had been in the first draft.

3)C’erano capitoli del libro che hai dovuto riscrivere o cancellare completamente?

No, ho scritto il libro senza fermarmi, e quando sono tornata per rileggerlo era solo una questione di approfondire le cose, riscrivere pezzi qua e là. A volte, dopo una prima scrittura, scopro di dover aggiungere (o rimuovere) un personaggio o un capitolo. Ma tutto... e tutti... in THE GIVER sono rimasti come erano stati scritti nella bozza iniziale.

4) Nowadays, do you regret something about your book? Would you change anything of it? (SPOILER)

I have always felt that the final section, the part that begins when the boy takes the baby and leaves the community….is too short. I wanted it to be a long period of time, and a vast piece of geography, that he had to make his way through. But it was difficult because I only had the boy…plus the baby, who couldn’t talk. So there couldn’t be any dialogue, or much interaction. It was all description, and I began to worry that it would be boring. I wish now that I had spent more time figuring out a way to expand that section of the book.

4) Attualmente c’è qualcosa di cui ti sei pentita riguardo al tuo libro? Cambieresti qualcosa in esso? (SPOILER)

Ho sempre pensato che la parte finale, quando Jonas prende Gabriel con sé e lascia la comunità.... fosse troppo corta. Avevo pianificato di estenderla per un lungo periodo di tempo, in modo da fargli attraversare un ampio territorio.

Ma era difficile perché avevo in gioco solo Jonas... più Gabriel, che essendo un neonato non poteva parlare. Per questo motivo non ci poteva essere alcun dialogo, o interazione. Era tutto una descrizione, e ho iniziato a preoccuparmi che sarebbe risultato noioso. Ora vorrei aver dedicato più tempo ad espandere quella sezione del libro

5) Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes, from the time I was very young..maybe 7 or 8. I never wanted to be anything else.

5) Hai sempre voluto diventare una scrittrice?

Sì, da quando ero molto piccola.. avevo forse 7 o 8 anni. Non ho mai desiderato essere nient’altro.

6) Do you think that our world could become like the one you described in your book or is it a fantasy?

There are three books that follow THE GIVER, and each describes a place and time in the future. One, the second book, GATHERING BLUE, describes a very primitive community that has lost all of its technology after some catastrophic world event, perhaps a nuclear war. In each book, the main character has one quality that sets him (or her) apart…an almost magical quality. That aspect is fantasy. But the rest, the setting, the governance of the communities… all of those are within the realm of possibility. In the first two books, the government has become corrupt. That could certainly happen…it has happened, is still happening. I think of the books as cautionary tales…they show what we should be concerned about, what we should be aware of, why we should be politically active. They give us a hint of things that we should guard against.

6) Pensi che in futuro il nostro mondo potrebbe diventare come quello che hai descritto nel tuo libro o è solo una fantasia?

Ci sono tre sequel di THE GIVER, e ciascuno di essi descrive un luogo e un tempo futuri. Il secondo libro, GATHERING BLUE, per esempio, descrive una comunità molto primitiva che ha perso tutta la tecnologia dopo una qualche catastrofe, forse una guerra nucleare. In ogni libro, il (o la) protagonista ha una caratteristica che lo distingue ... una qualità quasi magica. Quell'aspetto è fantasia. Ma il resto, l'ambientazione, il governo delle comunità... sono tutti nell'ambito della possibilità. Nei primi due sequel, il governo si è rivelato corrotto. Questo potrebbe certamente accadere... è successo, sta ancora accadendo. Penso ai libri come a racconti di ammonimento... Mostrano ciò di cui dovremmo preoccuparci, ciò di cui dovremmo essere consapevoli, le motivazioni per cui dovremmo essere politicamente attivi. Essi ci danno un accenno di ciò che dovremmo temere.
